Waterman Patrician in emerald green c1929, Gold trim - Broad Stub/Italic nib

Regular price £1,495.00

Dating from the late 1920s, this is an American Waterman Patrician in emerald (jade green) with gold trim. The pen measures 13.8cms capped

This is fitted with its original 14k gold Patrician nib (similar in size to a Waterman #8) which produces a writing line width varying from 0.5mm to 1.1mm so between almost a medium and XX broad width.  I'm tempted to call it an italic, but it's not super sharp edged and has some slight flex to it so I'm also leaning towards stub but the width differentiation is quite pronounced

The purpose of an italic or stub nib is to give variation in line width unlike the standard fine, medium or broad nibs which produce the same line width (monoline) regardless of which direction the nib is travelling.  With this type of stub or italic nib, the line is thinnest travelling left>right across the page, and thickest running down the page from top to bottom

This has been lightly used and is in excellent overall condition, particularly as it's almost a 100 years old.  The crispness of the two sets of barrel imprints is a good indication as to how little use this has seen: the main barrel imprint reads "Waterman's / Reg US Ideal Pat Off / Fountain Pen" and the subsidiary imprint around the end of the barrel has exactly the same text just without the Ideal globe logo. There is some minor darkening and translucence to the jade green at the top of the cap and very minor darkening to the end of the barrel. There is a little plating wear to the very top sides of the clip. There are the normal minor superficial marks that one would expect to see on a pen of this age.  Overall however, this is one of the best examples of an emerald Patrician we have come across and is very comparable to the example in Lambrou (FPOW 1995 page 41 pen 9)

This fills from an ink bottle using the lever on the side of the barrel and does not take cartridges. We have serviced the pen which includes fitting a new ink sac

Fountain pens from the 1920s and 30s typically have a slightly heavier ink flow than most modern pens, and a supply of decent quality writing paper and blotting paper is recommended

We have fully serviced this pen which includes disassembling the pen and ultrasonically cleaning all the parts.  We then reassemble the pen and fit the correct size of new ink sac, check the ink flow and the smoothness of the nib.  We also check and adjust the tightness and positioning of the clip.

This pen comes with our normal 12 month warranty.  We keep a detailed record of each customer's purchases so if you need to call us, we will have all the information here to answer any query
