Dating from around 1945, this is a vintage Mabie Todd Swan Leverless, model reference 1042, in light and dark blue blue pearl and black marble with gold trim. The 1042 model is distinguished by having three cap bands and a #4 sized 14k gold nib
The same model in green pearl marble and others is illustrated in Lambrou's FPOW (1995) on page 171. Several other variations of this model are also shown on this page
This is fitted with its original fine nib which has a good flexibility enabled by the significantly elongated nib tines. This flex allows the writer to control the width of line. This nib is imprinted 'Swan // 4 // 14ct // Mabie Todd & Co Ltd'. If no pressure is exerted on the nib, it writes with a line width of around 0.4mm
This has been lightly used and is excellent overall condition with very crisp barrel imprints as shown in the photos above
This fills from an ink bottle using the turning knob at the end of the barrel. This was one of Mabie Todd's innovations and is designed to be simpler and more robust than the alternative lever filler system. This pen does not take cartridges. We have serviced the pen which includes fitting a new ink sac
