Note the early clip (with ball and flange fitting) and early flanged lever. This clip is is superficially similar to the Swan clip patented in 1915. However,  the Swan clip has a flange on each side of the clip which insert into vertical slots in the cap and is held in place by a backing plate which is inserted prior to fitting the inner cap. This Conway clip also has flanges on the sides but these are to grip a piece of sprung metal which feeds through two horizontal slots and is held in place directly by the inner cap. While the Swan clip fitting is not perfect - cracks often appear running out from the clip slots - the Conway clip fitting puts substantial stress on the surrounding hard rubber and is much more tricky to replace. The piece of hard rubber between the two horizonal slots often breaks away.
